Dr. Brod started the retina practice in July of 1991 as Roy D Brod, M.D. The initial office was located on the first floor of a row home on Duke Street across from Lancaster General Hospital. We had only one employee. By January of 1992 the practice had grown enough to require a second employee. The second employee, Joyce Ellison has been with the practice for over 33 years and is currently the office manager. In the early 1990s the concept of transitioning from mainly inpatient to outpatient medical care was becoming more popular and Lancaster General Hospital decided to build an outpatient medical health facility in the suburbs of Lancaster. The facility was called the Lancaster General Hospital Suburban Outpatient Campus (Health Campus). The timing was just right as our retina practice had grown to the point where additional space was needed to accommodate our increased patient volume and additional employees. In the fall of 1994 the practice moved to the new Lancaster General Hospital Suburban Outpatient Campus (Health Campus) in building 2108. We started out on the second floor in a small office and shortly thereafter moved to a slightly larger office on the third floor.

The practice continued to grow with more services being offered as technology advanced. Again the timing was just right as Lancaster General Hospital decided to build a separate building on the grounds of the Suburban Outpatient Health Campus housing an outpatient surgery center and medical office space. This new building called the “2150 Building” opened in 2008 and the practice moved to the second floor of the building shortly after construction was completed. The ability to examine and treat patients in the same facility that the surgery was performed was a major advantage for both our patients and physicians.

The practice growth continued and we subsequently moved to a larger office space on the third floor of the 2150 Building where we remain today. In 2012, 21 years after starting the practice Dr. Brod added Dr. Kaplan as our second retina specialist. As the practice continued to grow we expanded the office space and added a full time clinical manager, Michele Gochenaur who continues to manage the clinical staff and operations. The name of the practice was changed to Lancaster Retina Specialists. In addition Dr. Gewaily, Dr. Scharper and Dr. Bhuyan joined Lancaster Retina Specialists to accommodate our expanding patient volume. We currently have 5 retina physicians and 35 employees in the practice today.
